Lake elopements and photo shoots: plan for changing weather

A lake with mountains behind it is one of the most beautiful settings for an elopement or a couple shoot. It is also a place where the weather can change within an hour. A little planning makes the difference between stress and your best photos.

Why lakes and mountains need extra care

Mountains shape the weather around them. Clouds can build up quickly, light changes fast and wind can pick up on the water, often in the afternoon. A forecast from the morning does not always hold in the evening. This is normal, and it is part of what gives lake photos their mood. The key is to expect it.

Build in flexibility

  • Keep the timeline loose. Plan the shoot or ceremony with a buffer of 30 to 60 minutes, so you can wait for a break in the clouds.
  • Have a plan B. Choose a covered or indoor location close by, such as a villa terrace, a loggia or a church, and decide in advance when you switch.
  • Plan a spare day. If you can, keep a second day free for portraits. Many couples are glad they did.
  • Check the forecast often. Look at it a few days before, the evening before and again that morning. Mountain forecasts can change.
  • Boats depend on wind. If a boat ride is part of your day, ask what happens if the water is too rough.

What to wear and bring

It can be cooler by the water and higher up than in town. Bring a light jacket, a shawl or a blazer, comfortable shoes for the walk to the location and, if you like, a clear umbrella. Rain, mist and low clouds often make the most atmospheric pictures. They need warm layers, not worry.

The photographer you choose matters

Ask your photographer how they handle weather. An experienced photographer scouts the place, knows where the light falls at different times, keeps backup options ready and stays calm when the plan moves. We photograph weddings and shoots at Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, and we plan every day with this in mind.
